This week the councillors attended the National Young Leaders Day in Hamilton. The focus for the day was around well-being and 'leading yourself'. Brad Smeele (a former pro wakeboarder now a quadriplegic) shared a few key messages with them:

On Monday we welcome Nicky and Harold the Giraffe from Life Education back to our school. They will be with us for the next three weeks supporting our health curriculum implementation.

Next Wednesday is the inter-school winter sports day. Please note we have had a change of venue for the Year 3/4 soccer - it will now be hosted at our school on the front field. Yr 5/6 netball is at the netball courts and Yr 7/8 ripper is at the Island Reserve. Food will be for sale at each of the venues. School lunches will also be available. Competitions begin around 10:15.

Over the last week I have enjoyed sharing my experiences and enjoyment of SCUBA diving with the Senior classrooms as part of their Under the Sea topic. We looked at the technical side of the diving equipment as well as the different dive sites and encounters with sea creatures along the way.

We are experiencing a high volume of students coming to school unwell and then going home again soon after. As mentioned last week, please keep your child at home if they are feeling unwell. We have had about 60 - 70 students off  everyday this week.

Ōtorohanga South School is joining the movement on Pink Shirt Day (Friday 19 May 2023), and encouraging our staff and students to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!

Pink Shirt Day works to reduce bullying and supporting schools, workplaces and communities to be safe, supportive, welcoming and inclusive for everyone. To celebrate this important kaupapa we’ll be showing our support by wearing a pink shirt to school tomorrow.

Our values focus for the start of this term is Effort.

Our school-wide values are explicitly taught in all our classrooms and across a variety of settings.
These value lessons are also supported by our school councillors sharing messages and role-playing at assemblies, as well as value reminders over the school intercom each morning during our daily notices.

Below is how we can display effort in one of our school settings.

Positive self-talk is when you talk to yourself in a positive way, also known as encouraging words or affirmations. It is important because it helps our tamariki perform at their best even in challenging situations. 

Positive self-talk makes a person feel good about themselves. It can encourage and motivate a person to keep going, look on the “bright side,” and put things into perspective.

Sometimes children get into a negative self-talk trap. Using phrases such as “I’m never going to be good at maths,” or “Everyone but me can handle this”, they are talking down to themselves.

We need to teach our tamariki positive thinking skills by replacing negative thinking patterns with positive phrases​.

Here are some examples. of how your child can practice doing it.

Replace: “I cannot do” with “I will do my best.”

Replace: “I'll never get this” with “I am patient and hardworking.”

The Lower and Upper Junior students are taking part in Jumping June this term, fundraising for the Heart Foundation. Students will practice their skipping skills and then participate in a skipping fun day on the 29th of June. Students can set up a page online at www.jumpingjune.co.nz. The teachers and students can't wait for our skipping ropes to arrive, so we can start having some fun!

Ikura|Manaakitia te whare tangata is an initiative set up by the Ministry of Education to provide free period products in all state schools across New Zealand.  The main aims of this scheme are to support whānau with the rising cost of living and to make a positive impact on student wellbeing. If you would like to opt into the scheme, please contact the school office. 

 

Many families now choose to spread the cost of the Technology fee as well as the Middle and Senior Syndicate Camps over many months by making small, regular payments to the school bank account via internet banking. These costs will be applied to your child's account early in the year and emailed to you so that you have all of the information on hand. The camp cost is not due until later in the year, but you are welcome to start making payments at any time. If you choose to take up this option, please use your child's name as a reference.
