Kia ora koutou.

We couldn't have asked for a better day for holding our inter-school winter sports yesterday. It was an excellent day to have all of our teams out and about playing their respective games. Thanks to all of the parents and family members who came along and supported them throughout the day. The parents I spoke to really enjoying themselves too. Last Friday we held two very important pink day events. As the picture shows we had an amazing amount of students wearing pink to show their solidarity and taking a stand against bullying. Our staff also dressed in pink for Pink Shirt Day and got to enjoy a pink ribbon breakfast to help raise funds for breast cancer education, research, and patient support.

Today we have Seth from Sport Waikato Volleyball here taking senior students for volleyball skills, while the juniors will be making the most of the sunshine, practicing their skipping.

Teacher contract negotiations update: The teachers' union is back negotiating with the Ministry of Education at the moment. We are hoping for a positive outcome - however please be aware that a potential strike day has been timetabled in for next Wednesday 31st May if the negotiations fail to make headway. We will let you know ASAP if this is to happen.

Ōtorohanga South School joined the movement last Friday, and our staff and students wore pink to support Pink Shirt Day and to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!

Our values focus for the start of this term is Effort.

Our school-wide values are explicitly taught in all our classrooms and across a variety of settings.
These value lessons are also supported by our school councillors sharing messages and role-playing at assemblies, as well as value reminders over the school intercom each morning during our daily notices.

Below is how we can display effort in one of our school settings.

A goal is something that you determine you want, and you work hard to achieve it. Setting goals can help you accomplish big or small tasks in your life. It's important to have a vision, or idea in your mind, of the end result, and create small steps that you can measure, or keep track of.

Achieveing a goal requires sustained effort. Below are some things to chat to your tamariki to help them set and reach their goals!

When our tamaiki have consistently demonstrated a particular KETE value and have received a number of KETE tickets for this value, they are awarded either a  K,E,T  or E certificate. 

Ka Rawe to all of our tamariki who received one of these awards at our Junior and Senior assemblies last week.

 

 

ROOM 8
Room 8 had a blast meeting Harold and Nicky in the Life Education Truck. They were learning about what a good friend is, and how to develop the qualities to enable strong and positive relationships with others.

ROOM 15
What an adventure Room 15 went on with Nicky and Harold on Tuesday! We arrived with cards for Harold and he read through them all with us. The Upper Junior are learning about reacting or responding to situations and all about our brain. Nicky started teaching us about Head Hassler, who is a pain in our brain, and Mind Master, who saves the day and makes Head Hassler smaller. We had plenty of laughs along the way and can't wait for our next session.

The Lower and Upper Junior students are taking part in Jumping June this term, fundraising for the Heart Foundation. Students will practice their skipping skills and then participate in a skipping fun day on the 29th of June. Students can set up a page online at www.jumpingjune.co.nz. The teachers and students can't wait for our skipping ropes to arrive, so we can start having some fun!

Ikura|Manaakitia te whare tangata is an initiative set up by the Ministry of Education to provide free period products in all state schools across New Zealand.  The main aims of this scheme are to support whānau with the rising cost of living and to make a positive impact on student wellbeing. If you would like to opt into the scheme, please contact the school office. 

 

Many families now choose to spread the cost of the Technology fee as well as the Middle and Senior Syndicate Camps over many months by making small, regular payments to the school bank account via internet banking. These costs will be applied to your child's account early in the year and emailed to you so that you have all of the information on hand. The camp cost is not due until later in the year, but you are welcome to start making payments at any time. If you choose to take up this option, please use your child's name as a reference.
