Principal's Desk
Kua hinga he tōtara i te wao nui a Tāne.
A mighty tōtara tree has fallen.
He maimai aroha ki a Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero Tuawhitu, he rangatira o tōna tāngata, ā, he pou o te ao Māori, kua haere atu kei tua o te ārai ki te uma o Ranginui.
Moe mai rā, okioki atu rā.
Here at Ōtorohanga South School we acknowledge the passing of Kiingi Tuheitia, a leader of his people and a pillar of the Māori world, who has travelled beyond the veil to join his ancestors on the chest of Ranginui. Sleep well, rest well.
We know he will be missed.
We would also like to share our deepest sympathies and aroha to the Te Wao whānau, our thoughts are with them and their whānau and friends at this very sad time.
Last Friday the Senior Syndicate held their annual technology challenge event. This year we acknowledged the Maramataka - Māori Lunar Calendar. The day of the event coincided with the moon phase Ōtāne - which was a good day for pouraka (crayfishing), hii ika (fishing), mahi māra (gardening) and toitoi (eeling). The students had to construct four tuna (eels) out of newspaper up to 1.5m long in the first challenge. In the second challenge they were required to construct an eeling gaff, fishing line and a hinaki (fyke net) to catch their tuna with. The students really enjoyed the challenges and learnt a few new kupu (words) and tikanga along the way.
Wetsuits: The Middle Syndicate are on the hunt for wetsuits for their upcoming camp. They are looking for wetsuits that would be suitable for smaller children (size 8, 10). We will return them after we have finished with them. If you can help out please let Ayla know: ayla.goddard@otosouth.school.nz
Lost property: We have a mountain of lost property located under the covered walkway on the Junior side of the school. Please come and take a look and see if you can claim some of the items. Generally what happens when we get this much is that we donate it to Op Shops. We would rather it goes back to the owners.
Teacher Only Day - Tuesday 29th October: We are holding our next curriculum refresh teacher only day on Tuesday 29th which is the day after Labour Day.
Ngā mihi,
