Principal's Desk
Kia ora koutou.
Welcome back to Term 3. It's going to be a busy term with lots of events already planned.
I have recently been appointed as the lead principal of Ngā Awa ki te Moana Kāhui Ako. NAKTM is the collective group of primary schools, ECE and the College within our wider district, from Maihiihi in the east to Tahaaroa in the west. NAKTM have been working together to improve the educational outcomes for all of our students. We have three achievement challenges that we are focusing on together: Wellbeing/Hauora - students feeling happy, safe, respected and included. Literacy/Reo Matatini - student engagement and individual growth in literacy for all learners. Te Aō Maori - students see, hear and feel their Māori heritage in their learning environments. This term there is a large focus on Te Aō Māori and as a result, a variety of hui have been planned for staff, school boards and our Māori whānau. The whānau hui is happening here at South School next Monday 29th July between 6 - 7:30pm in our school hall. We would like to invite you along to this hui - the focus is on introducing the work being undertaken through Rongohia te Hau and Tanya Savage from Poutama Pounamu (our professional development provider). The goal is to make more of a difference for our Māori students across our schools. Please let me know if you would like to attend for catering purposes by filling in this online form. Next term we will have a cyber-safety presentation that we would like a representative from all of our families to attend. More information will follow.
This week we welcomed Miss Fairweather (Liv) and Miss Storey (Tonja) to Room 15. Liv has been appointed as the new classroom teacher and will start fulltime in week 4, while Tonja will work in there part-time and provide classroom release for Liv throughout the term.
We have Parent Interviews on Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th of August (week 3). The online booking system will go live next week. We will notify you when it is ready via email and Facebook. It's a great time to come in and discuss your child's mid-year report and their next learning steps with their teacher.
Cross country training has begun! Our school event is Friday the 16th August, followed up by COPS Cross Country on Wednesday 21st at Waitomo.
Over the holidays the carpark shelter was constructed. It came in handy on day 1 with the unexpected hailstorm that turned up right on bell time. Our next step is to line two of the walls to protect everyone.
Ngā mihi,
